VIDEO Say you watch 10mins of an uncompressed Netflix video: The image resolution of Netflix is 1280 wide and 720 high. The number of images per second: 30 frames per second (frame rate). Calculate the size of the video with no compression: Calculate the size of an individual image in true-color. 1280 * 720 * 24 = 22,118,400 bits = 2,764,800 Bytes or 2.6MB Calculate the size of the sound for one second of video. 44*16*2 = 1408 bits per second = 176 KBps Calculate the size of video (sound + images) for one second of video. Size per second: 2.6MB*30+176KB = 78MB Calculate the size of the video (sound + images) for one minute of video. Size for 1min: 78MB*60 = 4.5GB per min Calculate the size of the video (sound + images) for 10mins of video. Size for 10min: 45GB per 10min If you have 25Mbps, how long will it take to download the video? 360,000,000,000 (bits) / 25,000,000 = 14,400 seconds or 240min or 4hours

HCI Software Morae Recorder creates a complete chronicle of the events that occur behind the scenes in applications and the operating system, as well as the onscreen and keyboard activity of the user. Morae Observer provides support for one computer to connect over a network to another computer running Recorder, allowing the usability team to observe the screen and camera video and hear the audio of the user, streaming from the Recorder source computer. These data streams are recorded in sync with video and audio of the user. Anyone logged into an Observer computer can log tasks and add markers during recording complete with text notes. Because Recorder runs silently in the background, it never disturbs the CS 321 user. Lesson One Interaction Design Page 11 Observer automatically saves and indexes the markers and tasks with the accompanying video and audio streams. The camera video, screen Within Morae Manager, a usability team can start new projects and edit existing projects, configure Recorder settings, open and analyze recordings, create graphs of the team’s analysis and metrics, and create a presentation video. The screen and video recordings collected by Recorder are automatically indexed, allowing for easy searches through recordings in Morae Manager. Manager allows the team to isolate tasks, important points in the video, add text notes, annotate with audio, quickly create video highlights to share and display the screen video

Traffic Characteristics Video  Without QoS and a significant amount of extra bandwidth capacity, video quality typically degrades.  The picture appears blurry, jagged, or in slow motion. The audio portion may become unsynchronized with the video.  Video Traffic Characteristics: • Video – Bursty, greedy, drop sensitive, delay sensitive, UDP priority • One-Way Requirements:  Compared to voice, video is less resilient to loss and has a higher volume of data per packet as shown above. • Notice how voice packets arrive every 20 ms and are 200 bytes. • In contrast, the number and size of video packets varies every 33 ms based on the content of the video. • Latency <= 200 - 400 ms • Jitter <= 30 – 50ms • Loss <= 0.1 – 1% • Bandwidth (384 Kb/s – 20+ Mb/s) © 2016 Cisco and/or its affiliates. Streaming on the Web • The contents of a compressed audio and/or video file are played out as they are being received. A playout buffer helps to smooth the variations in the time between each received packet in the stream (delay jitter). • Media player acts as the interface between the incoming compressed media bitstream and the related sound and/or video output cards. – For video, the browser first creates a window in the web page and passes the coordinates of the window to the selected video media player. • – Video media player initializes the video card with the assigned coordinates and decompresses the video bitstream from the playout buffer and passes it to the video card for rendering Media player consists of two parts : playout functions and control functions for interactivity
